"This design represents one of the original ancestors of the 'Namgis. 'Namxxelagiyu (Sea Monster) inhabited the waters around the mouth of the river Gwani (Nimpkish River). After the great flood, 'Namxxelagiyu came out of the river Gwani and became the man 'Namukusto'lis. He began to build a house, but was unable to lift the heavy cedar beams by himself. A thunderbird flew down and perched on a large rock nearby. 'Namukusto'lis saw the bird and wished that he could help him. The thunderbird, being a supernatural creature, knew the wish in 'Namukusto'lis' mind. It lifted its bird face, revealing a human face underneath, saying 'I will help you', as it lifted the beams in its talons and put them into place. When the work was finished, the thunderbird assumed human form by removing its bird skin and throwing it into the air. As it flew away, he said, 'You will only cause thunder and lightning when one of the people in this place dies'.
This design represents both the sea monster 'Namxxelagiyu, and the human he transformed into, 'Namukusto'lis."
-Gilakasla, T'suxt'sa'esagame, Kevin Daniel Cranmer
